At its Jan. 20 meeting, the Michigan City Board of Public Works and Safety approved several personnel and labor items.
A correction to the Local 228 collective bargaining agreement fixed a typographical error: the accounts payable/receivable specialist’s hourly rate should read $22.30 (inclusive of a 2% raise for 2026), not the mistakenly entered $24.74. Board discussion confirmed the union reviewed and agreed this was a typo and attorney review had been completed.
The board approved a time extension for Homer Tree Service to complete federally grant‑funded tree and stump removal work by March 1, 2026, citing weather delays in November and December.
The board also approved an amendment to the collective bargaining agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 to include a 2% wage increase and to designate a mechanic as crew leader for central maintenance employees (effective Jan. 1, 2025 through Dec. 31, 2029). City attorneys reviewed the amendment.
Human Resources Director Melissa Jones Henderson presented a revision to Policy 301 to add sick‑leave payout language for retirees meeting the "rule of 85" (age plus years of city service equals 85). Board members asked whether years of service must be consecutive; director said the policy language specifies city years of service and staff would confirm treatment of breaks in service if needed. The board approved the policy language and noted staff may revisit consecutive-service clarifications.
