The Noblesville City Council on Nov. 4 approved Ordinance 38-10-25, authorizing an additional appropriation to buy self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs) for the Fire Department.
Tom McDonald, deputy financial officer, told the council the department’s current SCBA equipment had reached the end of its life cycle. He said the purchase will be paid from two dedicated funds — the Fire Cumulative Capital Fund and the Cumulative Capital Development Fund — and that making an upfront purchase rather than financing over five years would avoid about $150,000 in interest costs.
The council opened the public hearing on the item; no members of the public spoke. Mr. Davis moved to close the hearing and later moved to approve the ordinance. Roll-call votes were recorded by the clerk: Mr. Boyce Aye; Mr. Davis Aye; Mr. Elliott Aye; Mr. Johnson Aye; Mr. Peterson Aye; Mr. Schwartz Aye; Mr. Smith Aye; Mr. Thurston Aye; Ms. Watts Aye. The ordinance passed 9–0.
The purchase is intended to improve firefighter safety and to provide equipment compatible with county equipment so Noblesville crews can serve as mutual-aid backup when called.
