The Anderson City Board of Public Safety on Jan. 12 approved demolition actions for multiple properties considered unsafe or derelict and tabled several other enforcement matters so owners can present repair plans or obtain permits.
Staff presented 703 Central Avenue with photographs showing trash and a dilapidated, long-empty house and reported certified service to three parties and newspaper publication. An unidentified board member moved to start the demolition process; the motion was seconded and members voted to affirm demolition.
Staff also recommended demolition at 2111 Halford Street, noting service came back unclaimed and newspaper notices were published Dec. 27 and Jan. 3; photographs showed fire damage and an unsafe structure. The board affirmed demolition after a motion and second. For 223 West 2nd staff said the owner signed the property to the city and that the structure was stripped to the studs and uninhabitable; the board affirmed demolition.
At 1219 West 5th staff reported attempts to serve multiple addresses tied to the tax title, noted the roof and ceiling had caved in and asked the board to affirm demolition; members approved the recommendation. For some continued files—such as 13–14 Fairfax (Scott Zachary) and 2023 Cedar—staff said owners have been asked to bring permit-ready plans or to show progress; the board tabled those items to future meetings (dates discussed included Jan. 26, Feb. 9 and Feb. 23 depending on the case).
Inspectors also reviewed 1019 West Road, where the owner had filled a previously cited hole and presented vehicle registrations; staff said the building commissioner considered the property 'very close' to compliance and indicated they would clear the case provided ongoing compliance.
Board members repeatedly cited the need for permits and for owners to present concrete timelines; staff said they had attempted certified mail service in multiple cases and had published notices when service failed. Several motions were seconded and recorded as passed; the meeting record shows staff will follow up with inspections and owner outreach for tabled items.
