Henrico board proclaims January 2026 Human Trafficking Awareness Month, highlights new employee training

The Henrico County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 27 adopted a proclamation recognizing January 2026 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month and highlighted a county training initiative to improve victim-centered responses.
Vice Chair Misty Rountree presented the proclamation to Mike Fein Veil, deputy county manager for public safety, and described recent training in which about 50 county leaders participated. Rountree said the training — led by Deepa Patel of Trauma and Hope (participating online) — focused on identifying signs of trafficking and ways to help survivors. “Our goal… is to train every county employee for what to look for in the area of human trafficking and who to tell when they see warning signs,” she said.
The proclamation notes Henrico law enforcement’s 14-year emphasis on trafficking enforcement and community partnerships, and calls on residents to observe the month and support prevention and survivor services.
What’s next: County staff said they will continue outreach and training through the year and coordinate with community organizations.
