Supervisors approve signage special exception for Ashland emergency center with conditions

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved a special-exception request Sept. 24 to allow signage that exceeds by-right zoning limits at the Bonsignore Ashland Emergency Center near the Lewistown Road/North Lakeridge Parkway interchange.
Deputy Planning Director Andrew Pompey described three signs: Sign A on Sunshade Lane requested 42 square feet (code max 30 sq ft) and 7.5-foot height (max 6 feet); Sign B at the North Lakeridge Parkway entrance requested about 142 square feet (code max 50 sq ft) and 8.5-foot height (max 8 feet); and Sign C would be an additional monument sign on the same road frontage, allowed in size but requiring a special exception because the ordinance allows only one sign per frontage.
Pompey said staff recommended three conditions: placing signs outside sight-distance triangles; installing low-growing landscaping in front of Sign C; and adherence to the standard special-exception condition that the signs meet all development requirements. Supervisor Pritchard said the site and surrounding uses (shopping center with overnight lighting and an industrial area) reduce visual-clutter concerns and moved to approve the special exception with the conditions; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing on the signage request.
