VDOT reports bridge, paving and winter plans; residents press for Turkey Ridge fixes

Shepherd said the Route 636 Goose Pond Road bridge replacement remains in project preparation with an advertisement date of December 2027. Mission Home Road has been paved and awaits traffic-engineering review for advisory signage and speed limits. For Lake Sappony, VDOT contractors will line an entrance pipe so the road can remain open; contractors completed repairs that allowed the lining work to proceed.
Shepherd also said crews are performing their last mowing cycle for the year and that VDOT is stationing an additional tandem dump truck and equipment near the mountain to improve snow response; a message board at the bottom of the mountain will be used to advise motorists when closures occur.
Public comments highlighted local problems: Larry Eckert said many Turkey Ridge Road crossroad pipes are clogged with 'crusher run' stone allegedly placed by VDOT work and urged inclusion of the road in a rural-rustic plan. "80% of the crossroad pipes on Turkey Ridge Road are completely stopped up," Eckert said, and he asked for more timely repairs and coordination with property owners.
Jennifer Lewis Fowler told the board recent Fredericksburg Road improvements left short deceleration and turn lanes and asked VDOT to evaluate longer lanes because a new event center at the corner could increase traffic and turning movements.
VDOT said it would follow up on the specific drainage and lane concerns raised by residents and will continue to update the board on project schedules.
What happens next: VDOT will continue project development for Goose Pond Road bridge and respond to citizen concerns on Turkey Ridge Road drainage and Fredericksburg Road turning-lane needs.
