Clarkston board hears construction updates: junior high phase 2 underway; high school and transportation work planned

District construction managers and architects provided a multi-site update to the Clarkston Community School District board, outlining work planned for the transportation building, the high school and the junior high in 2026 and 2027.
Transportation building: presenters described a proposed reconfiguration to improve safety and function: a secure exterior vestibule, consolidated staff and driver lounge space, improved visitor flow, restroom and conferencing facilities and a new bus lift to replace aging garage infrastructure. The redesign is being prepared for bidding in the coming month.
High school: presenters said campus site repaving and tennis-court replacement will occur, with phased roof replacements and replacement of roof-mounted mechanical (penthouse) units over two summers. The existing EIFS (exterior insulation and finish system) facade will be removed where damaged and replaced with insulated metal panels; the presenter said only a small number of areas showed visible water damage and those will be addressed as part of the work.
Junior high: phase 1 (auxiliary gym) has been turned over; phase 2 work is underway with foundations nearing completion and steel and masonry scheduled next. The contractor said roofing on the aux gym/weight-room area is targeted by year-end to allow interior slabs and subsequent phases. Parking reconfiguration on the west side and grading for a new softball field are scheduled with major work timed for school breaks and the upcoming construction seasons.
Trustee questions and district responses: Trustee McGinnis asked whether the EIFS would be removed completely and whether water damage had been found; presenters said the EIFS will be removed and visible water damage was limited to one or two spots that are planned to be addressed. The presenters noted some work must be staged over two summers because it cannot be completed while students occupy buildings.
Why it matters: the projects include safety, maintenance and capacity improvements that affect daily operations, student drop-off/pick-up patterns (planned multiple drop-off loops) and long-term facility durability. Approved construction change orders (see separate finance article) will fund some adjustments to the junior-high work.
