KIPP Texas Reports Uptick in College-Readiness Measures, Pivots to SAT Access

KIPP Texas chief academic officer Rona Simmons told the board on Dec. 13 that the district is seeing early, encouraging signs in college-readiness measures and is shifting strategy to ensure broader student access to postsecondary opportunities.
Simmons said the district is moving from an ACT-only focus to making SAT available systemwide so students can present the strongest test score for college admissions. As a result, KIPP Texas plans to give students a junior-year administration of both ACT and SAT, then tailor subsequent preparation to whichever assessment better fits a student—s strengths. Simmons stated tentative targets for this school year: roughly 30% college-ready on SAT/ACT benchmarks (SAT 1010 / ACT 21) and an AP target of 43% of graduates earning a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam.
The district also reinforced that AP coursework and advanced electives are part of KIPP Texas—s core curriculum across high schools; the system reported its current cohort shows one of the highest incoming senior-year readiness levels since 2020, with 23% of the class of 2026 meeting college-readiness benchmarks by the end of junior year in ACT/SAT measures. Leadership said universal school-based test preparation platforms, counselor-driven placement and school profiles for admissions counseling are central to the approach.
Board members asked for clarity on targets and how metrics align with national benchmarks. Simmons said AP and college-readiness results are tightly correlated with curricular rigor and that the district will focus on middle-school literacy and writing to raise future high-school results. A fuller data update (including October SAT/ACT results and college matriculation data) is expected in January.
