County recognizes Citizens Academy graduates; public commenters praise first responders and urge indoor range

Rockingham County recognized nine graduates of this year’s Citizens Academy during the May 19 Board of Commissioners meeting. Rasha (Rasha/Rasha Barnes) Barnes and Daniel Cruz, program administrators, described the 10-week program as an effort to increase resident understanding of county services; graduates were called forward and presented certificates.

Graduate Jerry Holland thanked administrators and said the program helped him understand county operations, including budget basics. Barnes listed graduates by name: Nicole Parkins, Jerry Holland, Rhonda Holland, Amanda Williams, Harriet Jaeger, Susanna McLaughlin, Leslie Talley, Tony Talley and Haney Ramirez.

During the public-comment period, Jim Kelly (Bryant Street) praised the Eden Police Department, Rockingham County emergency services and first responders for their handling of an April 24 crash, saying he was "impressed by how quick they got there" and that he was "proud of Rockingham County." Kelly said he did not intend to discuss accident details but wanted to commend first responders and said he had contacted Eden Police to coordinate assistance on scene.

Tony Talley (Burton Street, Eden) spoke in favor of establishing an indoor firing range in Rockingham County, saying the nearest indoor ranges are a long distance away and that a local facility would help with training, safe storage and concealed-carry practice. Talley said such a facility should be appropriately located and provide amenities such as secure storage and opportunities for law enforcement and residents to maintain proficiency.

Commissioners thanked academy participants and staff and encouraged residents to attend the upcoming budget work session.
