Bipartisan education task force to continue school site visits, focus on attendance and homelessness

Juneau — The bipartisan, bicameral Education Task Force will continue meetings during the legislative session, make additional school site visits in Southeast and rural Alaska, and deliver recommendations to the full Legislature in 2027, the task force co‑chair said Friday.
"The Education Task Force was authorized under House Bill 57," Senator Tobin said. He described school visits to Wasilla, Anchorage, Kenai, Fairbanks and plans for Bethel to examine rural education challenges. Tobin said the task force will take up attendance policy this Friday and is examining enrollment practices, including open enrollment changes, chronic absenteeism and supports for students experiencing homelessness.
Tobin said the group was grateful for roundtable conversations with students in Fairbanks and that community public comment has informed work so far. He also shared a public comment email for the task force and encouraged continued input.
What happens next: The task force will continue scheduled meetings and expects to submit its recommendations to the full legislature on the first day of the 305th legislature in 2027.
