City agencies report on design awards, flood sensors and aging services

Multiple city agencies gave routine program updates at the Borough Cabinet meeting.
Ari Gershman of the Department of Design and Construction said DDC won six public-design awards citywide and highlighted Queens projects including the Briarwood Community Library interior and exterior renovation and an Arverne art installation; DDC also said it broke ground with FDNY and community members on a new Rockaway firehouse designed to be flood- and blackout-resistant, with construction expected to finish in summer 2027.
A DEP representative thanked residents for storm reports, encouraged use of Notify NYC and FloodNet tools, and urged community members to clear leaves from catch basins in the fall to reduce local flooding. DEP said it would follow up on how residents can get flood sensors and flagged that the agency analyzes locations to prioritize sensor placement.
DOT's borough planner noted $40 million announced for universal seating/leaning bars at bus stops over 10 years and reminded boards that the Open Streets application deadline is Jan. 31, 2026; DOT posted the alternate-side parking calendar online.
The Department for the Aging reported that Medicare and Medicare Advantage open enrollment is open through Dec. 7 and offered to connect constituents to Health Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) counselors for enrollment help.
Agency representatives committed to follow-up: DEP will share FloodNet/sensor guidance; DDC said project details are on the Public Design Commission website; Department for the Aging will coordinate constituent referrals for insurance counseling.
