The North Hempstead Town Board voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt a resolution granting a secondary honorary name — Lonnie Harris Junior Way — for a portion of Swan Street in Westbury, honoring the late community landscaper and builder.
Council members introduced the petition and family members spoke at length about Lonnie Harris’s life and neighborhood contributions. Mary Harris, the late landscaper’s wife, told the board she wanted to “give a short synopsis of why I believe that he does deserve that” honor and described his decades of work in the community and his personal resilience. Family members including grandchildren and sons described Mr. Harris’s devotion to beautifying neighborhoods and developing homes that provided affordable options for local families.
The presenter of the resolution highlighted Mr. Harris’s work with the Community Development Agency and his long record of volunteerism and neighborhood support. Board members thanked the family for sharing memories and voted to approve the honorary designation; the board arranged a brief at‑dais recognition and said a public ceremony would follow.
The resolution is ceremonial (an honorary secondary name) and does not change postal addresses; the board said it will coordinate an on‑site recognition and formal unveiling with the family and local staff.
