At the Nov. 24 meeting the board received a monthly finance update from Steve Lennar and an enrollment overview from Superintendent Hilton.
Lennar said October expenditures totaled just over $2.7 million and introduced a new monthly summary layout for quick review. He reported the district's official fall enrollment as 2,394, slightly lower than the budgeted 2,403 but essentially flat year‑to‑year. Lennar said the final state aid bill increased the foundation grant to $10,050 per pupil. Multiplying that figure by the district's pupil count produces roughly $25 million in the state aid lines, which he said account for about 73% of the district's overall revenues.
Lennar explained that some revenue increases are restricted categorical grants and carryover funds that must be matched with specified expenditures; unrestricted operating funds increased by approximately $569,000. Trustees asked staff for clarification of variances in contracted payroll (EduStaff) and Lennar said staff would break down invoices and provide the details.
Superintendent Hilton also reviewed early childhood and kindergarten trends: kindergarten enrollment of 175 and combined young fives/kindergarten of 215 exceeded recent projections and may indicate improved retention of local families. Hilton cautioned that county‑level birthrate declines mean long‑term enrollment pressures persist, and said staff will use three‑year projections to inform budget and facility planning.
Next steps: finance staff to return with expenditure breakdowns (EduStaff variances) and the budget committee will continue work on fund balance definitions and a three‑year forecast.
