Summary
The board approved the AP Research course for next year after a brief discussion and positive student testimony. Roll call recorded six 'ayes' and one 'nay' (Trustee McGee).
The Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education voted on Nov. 24 to adopt a new AP Research course for the 2026 school year.
Trustee (mover) brought the item forward as an action item following its presentation at the Nov. 10 meeting. Student representative Tucker Gold spoke in favor of the course, describing the AP program's value and the opportunity for students to earn college credits. "It offers students the opportunity to get a capstone diploma," Tucker said, describing AP classes as a way to save college costs and gain rigorous experience.
After brief discussion with no substantive opposition, the board proceeded to a roll call vote. Trustee Davis, Trustee Miller, Trustee Simpson, Trustee Brooks and Trustee Martinez recorded 'aye' votes; Trustee McGee voted 'nay.' The chair cast an 'aye' vote, yielding a 6–1 approval.
The board did not attach a funding amendment at the time of adoption; trustees discussed the need to identify budgetary resources and to monitor potential future costs associated with launching new classes. Superintendent Hilton and finance staff were asked to clarify any cost implications as the course is implemented.
Outcome: AP Research course approved (6–1). Next procedural step: staff to confirm scheduling, staffing and any budget implications prior to implementation.
