Tecumseh presents test results: SAT above state, math dip in early grades prompts targeted interventions
Summary
District staff presented M‑Step, PSAT and SAT results showing strong SAT performance (reading/writing 71%, math 40%) and cohort recovery patterns. Staff outlined K–12 math interventions (Delta Math, K–3 interventionists, K–4 PD and curriculum review) to address a fifth‑grade dip and early middle‑school declines.

District staff presented assessment results for grades 3–11 and described a series of interventions aimed at addressing early elementary and early middle‑school math declines.
Megan, a district presenter, said the data should be seen as "one data point at one point in time" but that the district monitors cohorts year to year to identify trends. Key results presented: most grade levels outperform the county and state in ELA; math proficiency typically sits in the high‑30s/low‑40s and showed a dip in third grade this year; science and social‑studies results varied by grade, with eighth grade performing strongly; and the 11th‑grade SAT proficiency was reported as 71% in reading/writing and 40% in math, with 40% proficient on both measures.
To address observed gaps, staff described a multi‑layered plan: K–3 math interventionists working with identified students, use of the Delta Math recovery intervention (year two of implementation), targeted K–4 professional development for 2025‑26 focused on math pedagogy, a middle‑school study‑skills course with a math interventionist, and a district‑wide K–12 curriculum review to examine vertical alignment and recommend any curriculum changes by year end.
Board members asked about SAT preparation and comparison to peer districts. Megan described peer‑comparison groups and ongoing work to drill down to student‑level results and teacher/classroom patterns where needed. The district also expanded PSAT participation this fall for ninth and tenth graders to provide earlier practice.
The board did not take policy action on the presentation; staff will continue to report on intervention outcomes and curriculum review progress.
