Council approves draft wayfinding bid package for advertisement amid cost concerns

Council voted Aug. 5 to approve a draft bid package to procure wayfinding signage designed with Studio 1619 and reviewed by TxDOT. Lisa Sullivan, the city’s People & Communications Director, said the package will include signs, footings, breakaway poles and installation and is planned to be issued for bids with staff and council review of proposals and vendor interviews before a contract recommendation returns to council.
Sullivan said the design uses reflective sheeting for night visibility and complies with TxDOT standards; the estimated cost was cited at about $7,000 per sign based on comparable projects. Multiple council members criticized the estimate, noting that at $7,000 per sign the full 20-sign package could total about $140,000 and that those funds might be better used for urgent repairs (for example, the Ranch Park roof). Staff responded that the estimate is a conservative comparator and that the bid process could return lower prices and allow staged purchase (city-only signs first, then outlying locations later).
The motion to approve the draft bid package passed; staff said they will advertise the request for proposals, evaluate submissions, interview finalists and return cost recommendations and a selected vendor for council approval, targeting contract award at the Sept. 16 meeting if timelines hold.
