Franklin board approves temporary sidewalk and parking closures for downtown roofing project

The Franklin City Board of Public Works and Safety on Feb. 2 approved temporary sidewalk and parking‑space closures on Main Street and West Madison to accommodate a downtown roof replacement project. The board voted to allow contractors to close the north parking spaces on Madison nearest the building and two west‑adjacent spaces on Main during work hours to keep pedestrians and vehicles safe.
Coronet Roofing representatives said the full tear‑off project will be done in three sections to maintain business access, with ladders and a lift extending into sidewalks during work hours. "We are gonna be re roofing the Main in Madison project," Amanda Moore said, describing a phased approach, an on‑site project manager and measures to keep debris off sidewalks and vehicles. She told the board the contractor plans to stage most materials at a local facility and shuttle items as needed so they are not left on the street overnight.
Mayor (Speaker 3) praised the contractor's safety plan during the presentation: "You've you guys had one of the best safety plans I think I've ever seen," the mayor said. Board members required the contractor to coordinate start dates and signage with Brett Jones's street department and to notify adjoining property owners and tenants, including the building owner identified as Amy and nearby businesses. Contractors agreed to attempt to leave two farther‑west parking spots open at night to reduce disruption for nearby businesses.
The board approved the closure request by voice vote after a motion and second. Contractors told the board they tentatively expect to begin about two weeks from the meeting date, weather permitting, and that they will take steps (placing dumpsters on trailers, shifting lifts overnight) to avoid damaging the roadway.
The board’s action authorizes staff to work with the contractor on signage, temporary parking restrictions and notifications; the project manager will remain on site while work is underway.
