Franklin — The Board of Public Works and Safety on Wednesday approved a proposal from the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council to install two to three dog drinking bowls at locations along city trails.
Ben Worland, presenting for the youth council, told the board the group identified two priority sites — near the pickleball courts by the amphitheater and along the trail at Needham Elementary — and recommended attaching dog‑friendly bowls to existing water fountains to reduce cost. “Essentially, the idea is to get about 2 or 3 water bowls because…our ideal budget is…6 to $10,000,” Worland said, describing quoted add‑on and installation costs of roughly $1,000–$2,000 per attachment and about $6,000 for some additional work.
Worland outlined planned fundraisers, including a walkathon and a chili supper, to cover the project. Board members asked for procurement details and were told staff will return with quotes and a contract for formal Board approval. A board member moved to approve the project placement; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The board and staff noted Parks Department coordination for installation and said the mayor’s office would sign any necessary contract on the board’s behalf when the paperwork returns for formal review.
