Summary
Economic Director Kyle Markley reported the roundabout panel mock-up is complete, Kimley Horn was selected for the 16th Street corridor study with a September draft and November adoption target, and Phase 1 safety repairs on Main Street will proceed in 2026 with a larger project planned for 2027.
Economic Director Kyle Markley updated the Town of Speedway Redevelopment Commission on several near-term infrastructure and planning efforts, emphasizing safety repairs and the start of a corridor study intended to support future grant applications.
Markley said staff reviewed a mock-up of decorative panels for the roundabout and have submitted a permit to increase curbs there; he called the mock-up “very cool to see” and said contractors will finalize requirements once weather permits installation. He also reported continued review of proposals for the Mickley sites (6017–6021) near Lenoir and said a decision will follow the proposal review.
On the 16th Street corridor study, Markley said the commission selected Kimley Horn after interviews and expects a draft plan by September to support infrastructure grant applications, with an anticipated plan adoption by November. “They had a very good proposal,” he said of the consultant team.
For Main Street, Markley said Phase 1 will focus on safety — addressing crosswalks, asphalt patching and missing brickwork — as a quick project in 2026 with a larger, more robust project targeted for 2027 pending grant funding.
The updates were provided as part of routine staff reports; commissioners asked no substantive follow-ups beyond acknowledging the schedule and expressing support. Staff will return with final agreements and procurements for the corridor study and with contract language as vendor and legal documents are finalized.
