Committee recommends extension of Dallas historic‑preservation property tax exemption
Summary
The Economic Development Committee voted to recommend to full council a five‑year extension of the city’s historic‑preservation property tax exemption program, which staff said typically grants 5–10 years of city property‑tax relief and generally pays for itself over time.

Staff told the committee that the city’s historic‑preservation property tax‑exemption program — in place since 1993 — is due to sunset Dec. 31 and is customarily renewed in five‑year increments. The exemption applies to landmarked structures and properties within historic districts and can provide city property‑tax relief for five to ten years depending on the level of rehabilitation investment.
Andrea Gillis said studies show the program generally pays for itself over time, and staff cited the Pittman Hotel in Deep Ellum as one example. Committee members moved to recommend approval of an extension to full council for the Dec. 10 meeting and the motion carried.
