Dallas committee hears briefing on AI cameras for brush and bulky-trash trucks

City of Dallas sanitation and code compliance officials told the City Council’s Finance Committee on Dec. 9 that they plan to equip brush and bulky-trash collection trucks with still-image cameras and computer-vision software to give staff monthly, parcel-level visibility of curbside conditions.
“These cameras only capture what is visible from the public right of way,” Chris Christian, director of code compliance services, said during a presentation. He said the system would flag visible issues — bulky set-outs, illegal dumping, high grass, boarded structures — and present detections in a secure web portal for staff review.
Cliff Gillespie, director of sanitation, said the proposed service-model contract runs three years and totals approximately $2,560,000, with an annual cost of about $852,000 covering 100 cameras and supporting services. Staff described the agreement as a fully inclusive service…
