The Angola City Council on Jan. 20 approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to pursue purchase of a parcel north of Redding Road and asked staff to obtain appraisals before further negotiation.
Mayor opened discussion on the resolution and asked Matt of the park board to describe the proposal. Matt said Fairhaven Development contacted the city and that the park board owns adjoining property. “We’re just looking to get appraisals at this point,” Matt said, adding the parcel includes a ball diamond and Redding Road frontage. He told the council the park board would likely continue allowing the local kids’ league (AKL) to use the field under a lease the board would set for $0 and noted AKL had provided a certificate of insurance.
Council members asked about insurance and access. The mayor and Matt said the certificate of insurance should cover routine liability and that, if access required use of MSD property, the city would either perform improvements or negotiate an access agreement with MSD. There was no vote to purchase; the council’s action authorized pursuit and appraisal work.
The resolution passed by voice vote. Next steps: the park board will obtain appraisals so the city can determine a negotiating range.
