GOSHEN — The Jan. 26 Goshen City Council meeting included two community-focused items: the swearing-in of the city’s Kid Council representatives and a recognition of Officer Tara Powell for long service to the community.
Wendy, the Kid Council coordinator, described the program: each elementary school elected a fourth-grade representative after students created short videos identifying problems and proposing solutions. Seven students were named from Chamberlain, Bridal (packet spelling), Parkside, Waterford, West Goshen, and two at-large candidates; they were administered the oath and received certificates and plaques.
Later the council presented a key to the city and a plaque to Officer Tara Powell in recognition of her career with the Goshen Police Department and her continued work at Elkhart County Victim Assistance. The Presiding Official recounted Powell’s roles—K-9 officer, school resource officer, detective, and field training officer—and noted her 28 years of service and badge number 140. Powell addressed the council, thanked the department and community and reflected on relationships built during her service.
Both items were celebratory in tone; the council welcomed the Kid Council and applauded Officer Powell’s service.
