Heritage commission backs Fox Auto Complex for National Register consideration

The Heritage Preservation Commission recommended that the Fox Auto Complex (1621–1635 Hennepin Ave) is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places for statewide significance under Criterion A (commerce/industry) and directed staff to transmit comments to the State Historic Preservation Office; the motion passed 7–0.
The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission on Jan. 27 recommended that the Fox Auto Complex at 1621–1635 Hennepin Avenue be considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Erin Kaye, senior city planner in CPED, presented the nomination, prepared by AWH Architects and initiated by the property owner as part of a historic tax credit review.
Kaye told commissioners the nominated property includes five buildings across four parcels and an alley, four of which were built between 1911 and 1917 and are contributing resources to the locally designated Harmon Place Historic District. Staff recommended the property has statewide significance under National Register Criterion A for its role in early 20th-century automobile commerce and industry and supported a period of significance of 1911–1931 to cover the Fox Auto Company’s ownership.
There were no public comments. Commissioner Booty moved that the commission recommend the Fox Auto Complex meets at least one criterion for National Register listing and direct staff to transmit a letter summarizing the commission’s opinion and comments to the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office; Commissioner Masten seconded. A roll-call vote recorded seven ayes and the motion carried.
Under federal certified-local-government responsibilities, the commission’s report and the mayor’s recommendation will be sent to the State Historic Preservation Office within 60 days of notice from SHPO; the nomination will then be heard at the state review board on Feb. 10.
