County staff said the state will proceed with pavement preservation at Dutch John and scheduled Manila work next year; commissioners discussed buying or leasing a crack-sealing machine (estimated about $40,000) and noted a nighttime flight agreement that staff will place on a future agenda or approve administratively.
Daggett County commissioners on Jan. 27 reviewed maintenance and operational items for the county's small airports, including pavement preservation, routine crack sealing and an agreement to permit nighttime flights.
Staff said the Utah Department of Transportation is moving forward with pavement preservation work at the Dutch John airstrip and indicated maintenance at the Manila airport is likely planned for next year. County staff recommended more frequent, in-house crack-seal work to extend runway life between larger surface treatments.
Commissioners discussed options to acquire a crack-sealing machine, including lease-purchase, noting one estimate for replacement equipment at about $40,000. Staff said a county purchase could allow more frequent maintenance and reduce reliance on contractors, and they will gather quotes and explore lease options.
An agreement that would enable scheduled nighttime flights was circulated to commissioners; county staff said it likely can be handled administratively because contracts and funding are in place, but they will confirm with county counsel and place the item on a future agenda if needed. Staff also said they plan to finalize an operations and maintenance manual for both county airports.
The commission asked staff to follow up with the contractor and state contacts about timing and to check airfield lighting before any nighttime operations proceed. The commission recessed at 09:38 a.m. to conduct a Municipal Building Authority meeting.
