Council approves donations of surplus equipment and several municipal purchases

At its Nov. 13 meeting the Idaho Falls City Council approved multiple surplus donations and several equipment purchases.

Donations: Director Alexander recommended donating a surplus ambulance (unit 8000) to Bonneville School District 93 for use in the district’s technical program; the council approved the donation and authorized signatures. Council also approved donating eight Harris handheld radios to the Lost River Fire Protection District and four surplus narcotics safes to the Central Fire District; staff characterized the equipment as low‑value surplus but useful to neighboring agencies.

Purchases and preorders: Idaho Falls Power was authorized to preorder a bucket truck from Altec Industries via the Sourcewell contract for $280,296 to secure a production slot (the truck will be delivered in roughly 1.5–2 years and future councils can exit the purchase before delivery). Public Works received approval to buy a replacement Peterbilt sweeper via a Sourcewell cooperative purchasing agreement with Schwartz Industries for $397,703.60 under the municipal equipment replacement program.

Why it matters: the donations support regional public-safety and educational partners and the equipment purchases maintain city service capacity. Several council members noted the transparency of the cooperative purchasing process and the educational value of donating a repairable ambulance to the school district’s technical program.

Next steps: staff will execute the approved donation documents and procurement contracts and manage delivery schedules; council requested routine reporting on major equipment deliveries when appropriate.
