Museum of Utah sets summer opening; America250 Utah rolls out K-12 resources and statewide events

SALT LAKE CITY ' Agency leaders told the Economic and Community Development Appropriations Subcommittee on Jan. 21 that the Museum of Utah galleries in the North Capitol Building will open later this year and offered a legislative tour and public-event dates, while the America250 Utah commission outlined statewide civic-education and commemorative programs.
"We have four different galleries that will explore Utah's history," Tim Glenn, museum director, said, previewing themes that will cover Utah's natural landmarks, statehood and labor history. Glenn said the North Capitol Building is open but the museum galleries are not; he gave legislators dates for a tour on Feb. 23, a VIP open house on June 2, a ribbon cutting on June 26 and a public grand opening on June 27.
Jennifer Ortiz, director of the Utah Historical Society, noted the museum will be free to the public during Capitol Complex hours and that the institution has conducted an extensive public feedback process with more than 40 community meetings and more than 900 stakeholders.
Nicole Handy, director of America250 Utah, briefed members on six signature programs designed to "educate, engage and unite." Handy said the commission is working with 132 municipalities, has developed K-12 lesson resources aligned to state standards, and is circulating a traveling exhibit that will reach all 29 counties. She also described community activities including a Walk/Roll 250 miles challenge and an initiative asking Americans to share a meal with neighbors on July 5 as a national day of unity.
Both agency teams said more programming and logistical details will be shared with legislators and stakeholders ahead of the scheduled events. No funding decisions for these presentations were made at the Jan. 21 hearing.
