Allen honors Heritage Guild and presents Martin Luther King Jr. service awards

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Allen City Council proclaimed an Allen Heritage Guild Day and presented Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. Community Courage and Service Awards to local nonprofit leaders, recognizing volunteer preservation work and community service.
Mayor Bainell Brooks opened the Allen City Council meeting and presented a proclamation recognizing the Allen Heritage Guild’s 30 years of volunteer work preserving local historic sites, then presented Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. Community Courage and Service Awards to local nonprofit leaders.
The council read the proclamation noting the Allen Heritage Guild’s founding in 1996 and its work on Saint Mary’s Church restoration, the Depot Museum and community exhibits. Mayor Brooks invited the guild and members of the Community Engagement Advisory Board to receive the city’s recognition and tokens, including a mayor’s coin and tickets to a local hockey All-Star event.
Brooks also read a Martin Luther King Jr. proclamation naming Jan. 19, 2026, for city observance and presented this year’s Community Courage and Service Award to Belinda Kaiser, founder of JCK Resources, a nonprofit serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “I can't tell you how extremely honored I was when I opened the email,” Kaiser said, accepting the award and thanking family and staff.
The council additionally recognized runner-up honoree Christina Jing Patel of Under My Umbrella and invited award recipients to be publicly recognized at the ECHL All-Star Game and other community events in May. The mayor closed the recognition items with photographs and expressions of thanks to the Community Engagement Advisory Board for its nomination work.
The presentation concluded and the council proceeded to agenda business.
