Subcommittee backs Petersburg parking authority bill, reports it 10‑0

Delegate Pope Adams presented HB 14‑48 to allow the City of Petersburg to establish a locally controlled parking authority to address traffic congestion and safety from inadequate off‑street parking. The sponsor said the bill "does not mandate" creation of an authority but authorizes Petersburg to establish one after a public hearing and local approval.
City representatives testified in support, saying the authority would help manage tourism and economic growth. "We would love to have this so that we can continue to be good stewards to our constituents and all those tourists that are coming to our area now," said Steve Hammond representing the city of Petersburg.
Delegate Doug Reed moved the bill be reported; the clerk announced the subcommittee vote as 10‑0. The bill will move forward from the subcommittee to the next committee with the subcommittee recommendation.
