Representative King Kurt Johnson told the committee HB 901 would put the University of Florida Diabetes Institute into statute to improve coordination of research, expand physician education and increase early screening. He said diabetes affects more than 2 million Floridians and costs the state ‘‘tens of billions’’ annually.
Monica Rodriguez of the University of Florida Health Corporation and Yvonne Fernandez of AARP waved in support during public testimony. Ranking member Henson praised the measure in debate and the sponsor waived closing remarks.
The committee then called the roll and reported CS HB 901 favorably, 17-0. The measure will move forward for further consideration and any required fiscal review.
