Summary
Students and staff described a CareerConnect program built on the RIASEC framework and presented personal showcases to board members, highlighting job-shadowing, networking and improved presentation skills.
At the North Spencer County School Corporation’s first December 2025 meeting, students and staff presented a CareerConnect showcase that district presenters said embeds career planning into daily instruction.
Anne Rysen and school staff described the RIASEC framework—Realistic, Artistic, Investigative, Social, Enterprising and Conventional—as a tool teachers use to help students identify strengths and explore career pathways. Staff said the program includes daily announcements, class reflections and a culminating personal showcase in which students present their strengths, interests and career goals to peers and community members.
Students recounted concrete outcomes from the program: job-shadow experiences that led to additional worksite exposure and, in at least one case described by staff, a potential job offer. A student described how the process clarified priorities: “Does money matter to you more than maybe starting a family or having time?” that exchange highlighted how students are asked to weigh values alongside career options. Teachers said the showcases have helped students build confidence in public speaking and begin networking beyond the school building.
District staff encouraged board members to converse with the students and offer networking contacts. Presenters thanked the SIEC and a trainer (Dr. Steve) who led staff training; the district provided a letter from Dr. Steve recognizing a nearby high school as a career-connected school.
The presentation concluded with students sharing reflections on how identifying RIASEC themes focused their thinking about strengths, weaknesses and possible career pathways. The board then resumed regular business.
