Council approved a specific-use permit (S25-1001) to allow Joyful Journey Assisted Living to operate a group home at 800 Abbotts. Staff said the property is in an R-3 zone with future land use of low residential and that the request is consistent with Denton 2040 and the development code; Planning & Zoning recommended approval.
Ashley Eckstead, associate planner, told council the SUP limits the use to six residents age 55+ and that the operation will have 24/7 staff on site. Council questioned bedroom and bathroom counts and learned staff will require inspections and fire-rated walls between bedrooms and at least one accessible restroom before occupancy. Owner Marcela Huffman confirmed the property was purchased with existing modifications and that she operates an adjacent assisted living home.
Representative from District 2 moved approval with staff recommendations and the motion passed 7–0.
