Lake Norman Charter names Melanie Laza principal for new Elementary School West

Lake Norman Charter announced the appointment of Melanie Laza as principal for the new Elementary School West, scheduled to open in 2026.
Shannon Stein said Laza has completed six years as an assistant principal at Elementary East and previously served as a teacher. "She's done an exceptional job and has been really integral in helping us do some planning around curriculum and vision for the new school," Stein said.
Stein said Laza will collaborate with Miss Holland to align curriculum and vision across the two elementary sites and that a search for an assistant principal will follow next year. Laza is expected to begin duties as the new school opens and will split duties in the initial schedule described by administration.
The board also discussed project milestones for the new elementary building: steel is largely in place on McElwain Road, site work is progressing and the administration expects an early-May delivery of the building on schedule, barring unforeseen conditions.
The board will host a time-capsule event at the new site in October and invite community participation.
