Scurry County commissioners approve 150th-anniversary proclamation; historical commission unveils plaque plans

Scurry County commissioners on Thursday approved a proclamation recognizing the countys 150th anniversary in 2026 and heard detailed plans from the Scurry County Historical Commission and the Daughters of the American Revolution for commemorative events.

Jean, representing the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Scurry County Historical Commission, described a series of activities planned for the year. The commission is preparing a bronze plaque listing current commissioners to be mounted on a large stone at a publicly accessible site, and officials discussed two possible locations for that installation. "We're working on a plaque. It'll be a bronze plaque. We'll have all your names on it," Jean said.

Jean also said the commission is updating county historical markers, replacing three that have gone missing, and is preparing a dedication for a marker at the Ritz in March. The commission plans a July 3 screening of the film "1776" at the Ritz and an outdoor program on Aug. 21 to reveal the plaque and host a reception. "We want everyone to know that Scurry County has been around for 150 years," Jean said.

The presiding officer read proclamation language tying the celebration to the broader America 250 (U.S. Semiquincentennial) commemoration and noted the county will encourage community participation in local events and educational initiatives. The court approved the proclamation without a roll-call vote recorded in the transcript.

The commission also noted logistical tasks ahead, including choosing the plaque site and submitting material for a historical-marker book update. No funding breakdown or exact site was finalized at the meeting; the Historical Commission requested input from commissioners on location and schedule.

The court plans to return copies of the official proclamation to Jean and the commission will proceed with planning for the March and August events.
