Education committee hears school-reopening timeline, athletic-facility delays; approves copier and lease

The Education Committee met Feb. 2 and heard a report from Director of Schools Dr. Goldberg on weather-related school closures and construction delays, while approving two routine procurement items.
Dr. Goldberg said the district was tracking icy conditions and power outages that kept some schools closed and that warmer weather and forecast rain should allow most schools to reopen soon. He described progress on athletic projects: bleachers at Gallup are finished, work remains on dirt grading at Merrill High and the stadium build-out, and track surfacing must wait for a sustained stretch of about 55°F days so the surface material can properly cure. "You have to have a guarantee of 55 degree days for a series of days," Dr. Goldberg said, noting that surfacing is therefore likely to occur later in the spring.
A committee member raised concerns about part-time employees losing pay during closures, saying they "don't get paid like teachers do." Dr. Goldberg explained that teachers are covered by contracts that include extra daily minutes that the district uses to account for snow days; he said the district tries to balance payroll obligations and revenue and acknowledged the hardship faced by part-time staff. "It's terrible... our part time workers need that income," he said.
Committee members agreed to keep updates on athletic facilities and the innovation center on future agendas, with planned check-ins in February or March.
