Nearly 300 Aliento students and gun-safety advocates visit Arizona Senate for advocacy day

The Arizona Senate on Jan. 27 welcomed students from Aliento and volunteers from statewide gun-safety organizations who came to the Capitol for an advocacy day.
Senator Priorty Ortiz introduced the Aliento delegation, telling the chamber nearly 300 students from about 20 schools across the state were in attendance to engage elected officials on issues affecting their education and immigrant families. "Your voices make a difference. This is your Senate. You are welcome here," Ortiz said.
Senator Bravo recognized volunteers from Arizonans for Gun Safety, Giffords, and Moms Demand Action who were on the Capitol lawn to press lawmakers to reduce gun violence and advance related legislation. Other senators, including Gonzalez and Miranda, named and welcomed individual students and constituents who were visiting the Capitol and meeting with legislators.
The visits combined education-day outreach with advocacy: Aliento described itself during introductions as a nonprofit that supports students, dreamers and immigrant families, and the gun-safety groups said they aimed to work with lawmakers to reduce gun violence. No floor votes or legislative actions resulted from the introductions; the appearances were part of the Senate's opening activities for the day.
The Senate recessed after welcoming guests and continued its business.
