Committee advances SB1166 allowing earlier high school equivalency preparation in accommodation schools

The Senate Education Committee advanced SB1166 to allow county school superintendents to offer high school equivalency (HSE) preparation instruction through accommodation schools to students in grades 10, 11 and 12, provided participating students are at least 16 years old.
Sponsor said the change lowers the grade-level threshold from only grade 12 to grades 10–12 to expand access to HSE preparation. A senator asked whether expanding access might encourage some students to pursue a GED route earlier than a traditional diploma; the sponsor said the intention is to provide instruction to prepare students for the state's high school literacy and career-readiness test and not to encourage premature GED completion.
Vice Chair moved the bill with a due-pass recommendation. The committee voted 5 ayes and 2 nays and advanced SB1166 to the next stage before adjourning the committee meeting.
