The Arizona House Committee on Science and Technology unanimously returned House Bill 24‑51 with a due‑pass recommendation on Jan. 27. The bill makes technical adjustments to the Arizona Space Commission, altering staggered term expirations, adding astronautic educational opportunities to the commission’s duties and extending the strategic‑plan submission deadline to Dec. 31, 2026.
Sponsor Representative Wolman described the bill as a "trailer" to sharpen the commission’s focus as it moves from formation to operation. Brett Meacom, chair of the Arizona Space Commission, told the committee the commission began meeting in July and is developing a strategic plan that will be provided to the legislature.
Commissioner Michael Vargas highlighted Arizona’s existing assets — rocket‑range capability in Yuma, a spaceport in Sierra Vista and an emerging cluster of space companies — and urged modest state seed investments to help the state compete with larger programs in Texas and Florida.
Members from both parties praised the commission’s early work and suggested committee tours of local facilities. The committee returned HB 24‑51 with an 8‑0 vote and the bill moves forward to the House floor.
