At the Feb. 2 Wilson board meeting, member Casper reported BCTC enrollment reached 2,007 with a waitlist of about 300, prompting an RFP for a demographic/feasibility study. Casper also announced a $16,000 Jean Haas Foundation award to BCTC's machining program and $500 toolkits for students.
Board member Casper reported to the Wilson School Board on Jan. 28 committee activity at the Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC) and briefed the board Feb. 2 on enrollment, budget pressures and programming.
Casper said BCTC's current enrollment is 2,007 students, the first time the center exceeded 2,000, and that a waitlist has grown to approximately 300. In response to demand, the center issued a request for proposals for a demographic and feasibility study. Casper said rising health-care coverage costs and contracted salary increases have contributed to overall expense growth.
Casper also highlighted programming and funding wins. The BCTC Vision and Computerized Machining Technology (PCMT) program received a $16,000 Jean Haas Foundation Tooling Award to buy industry-grade materials and tools. As part of that award, second- and third-year students received toolkits valued at about $500 each to keep after program completion, intended to ease the classroom-to-career transition.
Casper encouraged families to attend upcoming BCTC events (Tech & Talent Night and career camp) and said district staff will host a BCTC forum for Wilson parents in the spring to answer questions about available programs.
The report underscored demand for career-technical education and prompted no formal action beyond informational updates to the board.
