HOSA co-presidents Paul Spinelli and Amy Tran told the Wilson School Board their chapter doubled to 34 members, sent 17 students to the state leadership conference (one student won first place in research poster) and asked for support as travel logistics and costs strain the group for March's conference.
Paul Spinelli and Amy Tran, seniors and co-presidents of HOSA Future Health Professionals at Wilson High School, presented the chapter's recent activities to the Wilson School Board on Feb. 2, 2026. They described HOSA as a co-curricular organization that supplements classroom learning with clinical skills practice, biomedical ethics debate, CPR training and epidemiology study.
Spinelli and Tran said the chapter sent 17 students to the state leadership conference last year, where teams advanced past the first round and placed in at least the top 25 of their events. Senior Sundura Shridhar won first place in the research poster competition and qualified to present at the International Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn. The chapter also competed in statewide events against industry professionals and placed third in a cybersecurity competition in Washington, D.C.
The students said the chapter has grown to 34 registered members. With the increase in membership they face logistical and financial constraints to keep students overnight at the March leadership conference; one option is to commute each day, which student leaders said would be ‘‘grueling''. They asked the board and community to share ideas and support and directed interested parties to contact their advisor, Mr. Raffel.
Dr. Kennedy thanked the students and offered to meet with club advisors to discuss barriers and supports for travel and logistics. The presentation closed with board expressions of appreciation for the students' work and encouragement for the chapter's upcoming activities.
