The Aurora Finance Committee voted to recommend multi-year adjustments to elected officials' pay under the Local Government Officer Compensation Act, advancing the recommendations to the Committee of the Whole.
Committee members agreed on a recommendation that the mayor's base compensation increase by 2.5% annually for four years beginning in 2027. "I recommend that the mayor's compensation be at a 2.5% each year for 4 years starting in 2027," one member said during the motion and it was seconded and approved in committee.
On aldermanic compensation, after discussion of regional comparables and the limits of apples-to-apples comparisons, the committee supported a one-time 10% "catch-up" increase in the first year followed by 5% annual increases thereafter (compounded), also starting in 2027. Proponents said the larger initial step was intended to close a shortfall caused by recent high inflation, then shift to a steadier annual adjustment.
Members discussed how meeting per-diems, health benefits and local workload affect comparisons with other Midwestern cities and noted staff guidance and Korn Ferry benchmarking informed the discussion. Committee members instructed that the recommendations and rationale be transmitted to the Committee of the Whole; the changes will require action under the statutory process for local government compensation.
