Drainage Board approves Mishawaka Veterans Parkway detention basins and outlet design

Representatives from Lawson-Fisher, Kevin Lehi and Jared Hess, presented details of the City of Mishawaka's Veterans Parkway extension drainage design and the board voted to approve the plan.
Lehi told the board the two detention basins together hold about 9,000 cubic feet for a drainage area of roughly 3.2 acres; each basin discharges through a 12-inch pipe, with one outfall designed at about 2.6 cubic feet per second (cfs) and the other at about 2.3 cfs. The basins include backflow prevention, riprap at outlets and emergency overflow weirs that would route flows to nearby ditches if runoff exceeds the design storm.
Lawson-Fisher and town representatives said the proposed discharge rates are below predevelopment rates and that the proposal is consistent with prior phases of Veterans Parkway construction, which previously routed discharge to Juday Creek under similar conditions. Presenters said the project had coordination and letters of support from the Juday Creek task force and that they have provided the requested hydraulic analyses.
A board member moved to approve the presented plan; the motion was seconded and, after voice vote, the board approved the Veterans Parkway drainage measures.
