CapMetro board approves purchase of 37 hybrid Gillig buses funded in FY27 capital budget

The CapMetro Board on Dec. 17 approved a contract to purchase 37 hybrid buses from Gillig, a procurement CapMetro said is funded through the agency’s FY27 capital budget and intended to replace older diesel buses.
Rahul Neher, CapMetro’s vice president of rolling stock and support equipment, told the board the hybrid approach was chosen to address safety, dependability and operational efficiency while advancing sustainability goals. "We are focusing on addressing critical issues, ensuring safety and dependability, improving our operational efficiencies, driving sustainability and enhancing customer experience," Neher said. He said the hybrids offer "approximately 25%" better fuel efficiency and provided approximate mileage and tank-size figures.
Board members asked clarifying questions about replacement counts and fuel-consumption benefits; Neher confirmed the purchase is a one-for-one replacement of older diesel buses.
Board member Veil moved to approve the contract; Board member Ellis seconded. The motion carried unanimously with no opposition recorded.
Ending: CapMetro staff said funding is included in the FY27 capital budget and the procurement will proceed to contract execution. No amendments to scope or funding were made at the board meeting.
