LaPorte County commissioners approve routine payroll, travel and emergency declaration; appoint new park board member

LaPorte County commissioners met Feb. 4 and approved a series of routine administrative actions, including personnel payouts, travel requests, and an emergency declaration tied to a recent snowstorm.
The board voted by voice to approve biweekly payroll of $1,588,290.29 and operating expense claims totaling $1,533,590.07. Commissioners also approved out‑of‑state training travel for Division of Child Support staff (funded from federal incentive dollars tied to productivity), and a separate juvenile services center travel request.
Personnel actions included approval of a sick‑day payout for retiring EMS employee Jeff Rose and authorization of a sick‑pay payout for a Superior Court employee with a listed retirement date of March 13, 2026. Commissioners appointed Evan Wooding to fill a Park Board vacancy created when Michelle Brady resigned for work conflicts.
The board adopted a LaPorte County defensive driving and vehicle safety training policy. County staff said the insurance provider will supply in‑service training at no cost; attendance will be tracked and the policy includes language that employees who do not complete required training may be restricted from driving county vehicles.
Facilities staff requested and received authority to enter a $905 change order to extend tile to the soffit on two bathroom walls in a courthouse renovation project to produce a finished look.
Finally, on a recommendation from county staff and the mayor, commissioners approved an emergency declaration covering Jan. 23–31 to document overtime, fuel and snow‑removal costs in hopes of qualifying for reimbursement or grant funding.
Most actions passed by unanimous voice vote; the board adjourned after a brief report on state legislative activity.
