Austin council finalizes committee roster process and reactivates Regional Affordability Committee

The Austin City Council used its first work session of 2026 to set committee assignments and to reopen a Regional Affordability Committee intended to coordinate affordability work across transportation, childcare and workforce topics. Mayor Kirk Watson said the city code requires committee membership be set at the first work session of the calendar year and described a process of consultation, posting on the council message board and formal submission to the city clerk.
Watson proposed keeping most members in their existing committee roles with a few adjustments: Mike Siegel would become vice chair of the Housing and Planning Committee and would also join the Public Safety Committee; Watson said he would step off Public Safety. "The code sets out that Council Committee membership is determined at the first Council work session of each calendar year," Watson said, explaining he would present the finalized list to the clerk and post it on the message board once completed.
Councilmember Crystal Lane urged a targeted, holistic approach to regional affordability that would address transportation, childcare, wages and workforce issues. "I would really like the opportunity to be a voting member" of the Audit and Finance Committee, Lane said, adding that she and Watson would serve as initial contacts to get the Regional Affordability Committee underway. Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes and other councilmembers signaled support: Fuentes said she will finish her fourth year as chair of the Public Health Committee this year and will look for leadership successors next year.
Councilmember Ryan Alter said he intends to take the Clean Air Force of Central Texas board seat previously held by another member and noted he has already assumed the mayor's prior role on the firefighter pension board under a recent legislative change. Watson said he would confirm the clerk's record to ensure the city reflects the correct designee for the pension board.
The council did not take formal votes on committee assignments at the work session. Watson said he would submit the committee roster to the city clerk and post the list on the message board when that submission is complete. The work session adjourned at 10:37 a.m.
