Austin recognizes Rolling with the Homies; founder recounts injury and mission

Council Member José Velasquez announced a proclamation honoring Rolling with the Homies, a nonprofit social support group that assists people with disabilities, including those with spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries. "Rolling with the Homies is helping individuals with spinal cord injuries and disabilities find connection and confidence through community gatherings, resource sharing, and special events," Velasquez said while reading the proclamation and proclaiming 12/11/2025 as Rolling with the Homies Day.
Sierra Conno, the group's founder, told the audience she was shot three times and was paralyzed from the waist down, and that her organization aims to "fill in the gap in the disability community" by providing peer support and mutual aid. "Everyone behind me has supported me from day 1, and I appreciate everyone here today," Conno said. Two supporters—Anthony Chase and Patrick Boardman—shared personal perspectives about how the group has helped them with internships, camaraderie and addressing loneliness after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The proclamation was ceremonial; no council motions or budget actions were recorded during the ceremony. The city and the nonprofit encouraged continued community support and awareness for disability-focused programming.
