The Kentucky Senate convened for a brief organizational session and introduced a package of new bills and resolutions before adjourning until 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2026.
The clerk read a list of new measures, including Senate Bill 10, described as proposing amendments to sections of the Constitution of Kentucky to limit the governor's ability to grant pardons and commute sentences. Other measures announced included Senate Bill 91 on standardizing real property tax bills, Senate Bill 92 on Medicaid coverage for palliative care, and Senate Bill 93 proposing a constitutional provision related to Medicaid expansion. Additional bills and resolutions included items on motor vehicle dealers, school transportation (SB 95, declared an emergency), sickle cell disease (SB 96), and memorial resolutions honoring community members.
The session briefly handled routine business. The clerk called the roll and the presiding officer announced that "There being 34 members present, a quorum is declared and the senate is authorized to proceed with business." The Senator from Taylor moved to excuse absent senators; the motion was adopted "without objection." The same senator then moved to approve the journal from Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026; that motion was also approved without objection.
Several senators sought recognition to be added as cosponsors to bills and resolutions; the presiding officer directed them to file the appropriate paperwork. The presiding officer also reported there were no floor amendments at that time.
After introductions and procedural actions the Senator from Taylor moved that the Senate adjourn until 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2026. The presiding officer announced the Senate would stand adjourned until that date.
The session opened with an invocation by Anne Shepherd of Bridgeport Christian Church, who said in her prayer, "God, you are the fountain of wisdom." There was no extended debate on any introduced measure during the session; the items were filed for future consideration according to normal calendar procedures.
