Board retreat focuses on governance, committee structure and training after state monitoring ends
Summary
At a July 16 retreat, Ridgefield Park trustees reviewed a board self-evaluation that recommended clearer board goals, more professional development (finance, policy, PD on governance) and a review of committee structure to reduce overlap and improve community engagement.

Kelly Mitchell, a field service representative from New Jersey School Boards, led the board through a self-evaluation exercise aimed at converting survey results into board goals and a 12-month governance calendar. The facilitator said the board scored well on policy use and community transparency but identified vision/mission and structured board professional development as areas for growth.
"The glows are that the superintendent and the board consistently centered their decisions and actions around the district's mission and vision," Mitchell said when summarizing the evaluation. Trustees discussed turning evaluation findings into two near-term board goals: a formal quarterly professional-development schedule (covering finance, policy and student-achievement topics) and a review of committee structure, particularly reconciling overlap between the faculty & programs and personnel responsibilities.
Trustees described the board's transition after state monitoring as a key context: several members noted that the removal of a state monitor reflected sustained district improvements and that the board can now focus on governance-level work. Multiple trustees urged better committee reporting and suggested the board consider an ad hoc or committee-of-the-whole process to develop two-way community engagement and to avoid overstepping communication roles reserved for administration.
The facilitator recommended practical next steps: adopt a schedule for trustee trainings, select topics and timelines, and direct administration to supply data about current community engagement efforts so an ad hoc committee (if formed) can make informed recommendations. The board agreed to wordsmith proposed goals and adopt both board and district goals at the September meeting, with follow-up timelines and indicators for success.
