Freeport council approves short extension of Veolia water contract, 4–1

Freeport — The City Council voted to extend the city’s contract with Veolia, the private operator of the municipal water utility, through February to preserve continuity while city staff continue contract negotiations.
City Manager Kelly and staff said the contract originally dated Sept. 14, 2015, had been extended previously to Dec. 31 and that Veolia is amenable to a short-term extension to Feb. to allow additional review. Council members asked for a workshop so council could be briefed on contract particulars outside a regular meeting.
The motion to approve the temporary extension passed 4–1. One council member voted “nay.” Council supporters said an extension was prudent to avoid disruption of water services while negotiations and staff briefings continue.
Next steps: staff proposed a workshop to give council a detailed briefing on the contract’s terms and the status of negotiations before any longer-term action.
