Caroline County Public Schools — At a Feb. 2, 2026 school board work session, Dr. Sarah Calverick, superintendent of schools, presented a county-generated board self-reflection survey and asked the board to confirm redlined edits to its norms and protocols before the survey is sent in March. "As a master board, annually, we are required to complete a self reflection survey," Calverick said as she reviewed the packet and a redline version of the norms.
Calverick told the board the first 17 questions on page two address norms and protocols and that later questions connect to the division strategic plan and board goal-setting, including teaching and learning, relationships, health and safety, and talent management. She also said the packet includes an email from Samantha Bosserman of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) to ensure the board had the exact copy used after the July 2025 retreat.
Board members raised procedural clarifications during the discussion. One member asked about a line titled "communications between board members and other staff;" Calverick explained that the expectation is that communications from board members come to the superintendent, who will route operational questions to staff as appropriate. Members also noted some pages in the packet were not numbered and asked staff to correct pagination.
Calverick invited further edits and set a timeline for finalizing the document: "If you have any suggestions with the survey, please bring them back to me by the ninth," she said. She told members she would adjust length if needed and would finalize the survey for distribution in March.
The board expressed general support for adopting the redlined norms and protocols pending any late edits; no formal adoption vote was recorded at the work session. The discussion concluded with agreement that Calverick would incorporate board feedback and circulate the survey materials to members in March.
